SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1: Melbourne
On arrival, transfer to your accommodation by seat-in-coach (shared) and you have the rest of the day at leisure. Take a good rest before embarking on your drive to Adelaide (Hotel check in time start from 2pm, earlier check in is subjected to room availability on arrival).

Do take some time to wander through Melbourne's laneways. The centre of Melbourne is threaded with cobbled laneways, which have become a mecca for coffee shops, cafés and unique shopping boutiques. Start at Flinders Street station, wander down Degraves Street, and explore the city’s beautiful arcades and street art around every corner - including works from England-based graffiti artist Banksy. Head down Collins Street to visit the exquisite Block Arcade then get your caffeine hit at pocket-sized Brother Baba Budan or Patricia, both on Little Bourke Street.

Overnight: Melbourne City

Day 2: Melbourne > Weribee > Geelong (Approx 83.2KM / 1hour 30mins)
Pickup your car from Hertz depot and embark on your road trip. Just a 30-minute drive south of Melbourne, start your adventure with a safari at the Werribee Open Range zoo to see rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras and antelopes grazing on the grassy plains. You'll come face-to-face with gorillas, a pride of lions, monkeys and cheetahs on the Pula Reserve Walking Trail.
When you've had your fill, continue for 50 minutes to the bayside city of Geelong. Call into the Geelong Gallery to view the latest exhibition or make a beeline for Bellarine Peninsula’s bevy of wineries. Ask for a table on the deck at Jack Rabbit Vineyard. Don’t let the sweeping bay views distract you from the lunch menu brimming with local produce and cool-climate wines.

Overnight: Geelong

Day 3: Geelong > Great Ocean Road (Approx 207KM / 3hour 30mins)
Start the day early. Proceed to Torquay, the start of the Great Ocean Road, and recognised as the surfing capital of Australia. After Torquay, follow the coast road through Anglesea to the picturesque town of Lorne. Take time to see the beautiful Erskine Falls and then travel the scenic coastline from Lorne to Apollo Bay. This has been described as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world. Keep your camera handy as you will see the mighty 12 Apostles when approaching Port Campbell. Soak up the breathtaking views from the lookout, or take a helicopter ride (own expense) for a bird’s eye view of this entire scenic coastline. On the road, watch nature’s drama unfold at every turn, from Loch Ard Gorge’s perfect eeriness to the Bay of Islands’ windswept beauty.

Overnight: Port Campbell

Day 4: Port Campbell > Halls Gap (Approx 207KM / 2hour 30mins)
Ease into your day with a 5.7-kilometre (3.5-mile) amble along Warrnambool’s award-winning Foreshore Promenade. Between June and September, try your luck at whale watching from Logans Beach. Drive 90 minutes north through rich Western District farmlands and reach the southern tip of the Grampians National Park. For a regional cultural fix, sidetrack to Hamilton Gallery and ogle a diverse collection of artworks. On your way back, drop into Pierrepoint Wines to sample pinot noir before an early lunch at Parker Street Project in Dunkeld. The daunting Grampians escarpment dominates the skyline and hints at what’s ahead. You’ll feel drawn to understand the ancient landscape, long-known as Gariwerd. Delve deep into the regional Aboriginal heritage at Brambuk – The National Park and Cultural Centre in Halls Gap. Get adventurous with a boomerang throwing demonstration, a didgeridoo workshop or a tour of age-old rock art sites.

This afternoon, do consider stopping by The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld (home to Australia’s largest working restaurant kitchen garden) for lunch at Parker Street Project (own expense). Parker Street Project offers a relaxed meal, with a casual style menu designed for sharing. The lunch menu offers a range of seasonal dishes, using produce from the hotel's kitchen garden.

Thereafter, proceed to Halls Gap and rest for the day.

Overnight: Halls Gap

Day 5: Halls Gap
You have a whole day to explore the region leisurely. Lace on your hiking shoes and bushwalk along the Grampians Peaks Trail, keeping an eye out for wildlife. Climb high for lofty views and natural vistas. Tick off the Grampians must-do sights: Boroka Lookout, Reeds Lookout, The Balconies and Mackenzie Falls. With hundreds of kilometres of tracks and trails criss-crossing the park, you’ll easily find a quiet space for reflection, and the perfect spot for an afternoon snack at Zumsteins picnic area. Be prepared to share the solitude with a grazing kangaroo, waddling echidna or illusive lyre bird.

Overnight: Halls Gap

Day 6: Halls Gap > Mt Gambier (Approx 220KM / 2 hour 35mins)
Mount Gambier, which sits on an ancient extinct volcano and is circled by vivid crater lakes. Take the 3.6-kilometre (2.2-mile) trail around Blue Lake, which turns cobalt blue from December to March. You can also spend a bit of time exploring the stunning Umpherston Sinkhole. This unique natural attraction was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. It was turned into a picturesque garden by James Umpherston around 1886 and is open at all times. From dusk each evening the area comes alive as resident possums venture into the floodlit gardens to feed.

Overnight: Mt Gambier

Day 7: Mt Gambier > Coonawarra > Robe (Approx 178KM / 2 hours 4mins)
Slight detour this morning. In less than an hour from Mount Gambier is the red wine country wrapped around Coonawarra, which some say is rather like the Bordeaux region of France. There are, of course, plenty of amazing places to eat including Chardonnay Lodge, Fodder & Ottelia, Milieu at The Bushman’s Inn, Pipers of Penola, and Vintage Cafe at Penola.

This evening, do visit the Robe Obelish during sunset for a stunning instagram shot!

Overnight: Robe

Day 8: Robe > Hahndorf (Approx 311KM / 3 hours 10mins)
This morning head travel along the coast along the Coorong National Park skirting Lake Albert and Lake Alexandria. Travel to the towns of Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge. In the late afternoon, arrive in Hahndorf. Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest German settlement set in the heart of the lush Adelaide Hills. This old fashioned village oozes Bavarian charm, with plenty of pubs, cafes, and artisan shops to enjoy. Throughout the town, boulevards are lined with vibrant, 100-year-old elm and plane trees that sit side by side with traditional, restored Fachwerk buildings. The town is dedicated to preserving is Germanic heritage, with numerous pubs serving up authentic gastronomic delights from Germany, but there are also chic new shops and businesses that offer a deluxe atmosphere in the small-town streets.

Overnight: Hahndorf

Day 9: Hahndorf > Adelaide (Approx 32.1KM / 45mins)
Proceed back to Adelaide for your onwards flight.
