You'll visit ‘Antarctica’ the snow and ice experience, survive an Antarctic Storm, learn about life in modern day Antarctica and Scott Base, and hang out with Little Blue Penguins! There’s also the famously exciting Hagglund ride and an awesome simulated 4D cruise, Happy Feet 4D, plus heaps more!

Overnight: Heartland Hotel Cotswold (1 Bedroom Suite / 2 Bedroom Suite for 3A,2A1C,2A2C,4A)

DAY 2 – CHRISTCHURCH TO FOX GLACIER (APPROX 404KM)

Start early today as it's going to be a long drive. Head to the West via Arthur's Pass. This route is first used by Maori tribes crossing to the west coast to find pounamu (jade). Today, it's a sophisticated mountain pass, memorable for its scenery as well as its breath-taking civil engineering. The settlement of Arthur's Pass is base for climbing, hiking, hunting and skiing adventures in the adjacent national park. Once you are through the pass, the misty mountains gradually give way to classic west coast river and forest scenery. You can stop at Hokitika for a short break. Hokitika was first settled in 1860, after the discvery of gold on the west coast. It still has the feel of a ‘frontier town’, and there are some lovely old buildings to admire. Greenstone (NZ jade) is the town's treasure these days - you can see it being polished and sculpted. Nearby at West Coast Treetops Walk, you can wander through the forest canopy on purpose-built boardwalks.

Continue the journey to Fox Glacier. The glacier's terminal face is just 5 kilometres from the township, and the road to the walking track crosses ancient moraine from earlier advances and retreats. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier was named after an early New Zealand Prime Minister, William Fox.

Overnight: Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier with Full Breakfast (Standard Room, 2 rooms for 4 adults and 2A2C)

DAY 3 - FOX GLACIER TO WANAKA (APPROX 263KM)

Spend the morning in Fox Glacier, perhaps join a glacier walk before leaving for Wanaka after lunch (own expense). The long one-lane bridge over the Haast River leads you into the settlement of Haast, once a construction camp for the Ministry of Works (the government department responsible for road and bridge building). It’s a town with a touch of the wild west – helicopters fly deer hunters into the rugged ranges and local pubs make a feature of stuffed animal trophies.

Enjoy waterfalls and river scenery as you leave the coast and climb up the Haast river valley to Haast Pass. The road snakes through the Aspiring National Park, and the vegetation becomes more sparse as you travel inland. The wilderness town of Makarora is a chance to refuel and refresh. Watch for the famous ‘bra fence’ – it’s become a local legend. Lakes Wanaka and Hawea make the last part of your trip beautifully scenic.

The lakeside town of Wanaka can provide you with an appealing mix of fine living, family fun and adventure. It has a high concentration of cafes, restaurants and interesting shops. You’ll also find unique attractions, like the 3D maze and the quirky Paradiso Cinema.

Overnight: Edgewater - 1 Bedroom Suite / 2 Bedroom for 4A)

DAY 4 – WANAKA TO QUEENSTOWN (APPROX 71KM)

The shortest route to Queenstown is over the Crown Range Road. It's a challenging drive, but the views are amazing and you’ll probably encounter friendly keas (mountain parrots). More conservative drivers can take the route that runs beside the Clutha River, Lake Dunstan and the Shotover River. The vineyards of the Gibbston area and bungy jumpers at the Kawarau River Bridge are interesting distractions along the way.

Whichever route you take, it's an easy turn-off to the charming heritage town of Arrowtown. Once a gold rush settlement, today it's a perfectly preserved piece of the past. Explore the Chinese miners' settlement by the Arrow River, visit the Lakes District Museum, then find a convivial café to soak up the surroundings. Horse trekking and gold panning will appeal to more active travellers, browsing the shops will suit those who just want to take it easy.

The alpine resort of Queenstown is exciting, sophisticated and fantastically scenic. It’s the place to source almost any kind of adventure, including bungy, jet boating, horse trekking, rafting and river surfing. It’s also a destination for luxury experiences – gourmet food and wine, spa treatments and leisurely games of golf.

Overnight: Heartland Hotel Queenstown (Standard Air Conditioned Room with view / Family View Room for 2A2C,4A)

DAY 5 – MILFORD SOUND TOUR WITH LUNCH

A Great Sights vehicle will pick you up from your Queenstown hotel for your transfer to The Station, Corner Camp and Shotover Street, Queenstown, the departure point of your tour. Depart Queenstown alongside Lake Wakatipu and enter the Fiordland National Park, a region rich with dense rainforest, lakes and waterfalls cascading from rugged mountain peaks. Pause at the Mirror Lakes before progressing through the Upper Hollyford Valley. As exiting the 1.2 kilometre long Homer Tunnel prepare for the breathtaking Cleddau Valley and the descent into Milford Sound. Upon arrival board the boat for an 1 and 3/4 hour scenic cruise on Milford Sound to see Mitre Peak, glacier scarred rock walls that rise vertically 1,200 metres from the sea and waterfalls. After the cruise, re-board the coach and continue on to Te Anau. Tour concludes at approximately 5:00pm, at which time hotel drop offs will commence.

DAY 7 – QUEENSTOWN TO MT.COOK (APPROX 265KM)

From Queenstown you head through the Gibbston Valley, dotted with wineries. The beautiful Lindis Valley leads you into the even more beautiful Lindis Pass. In winter the mountains are dusted with snow, in summer the landscape is painted in shades of gold. You'll know you're in Omarama when you see the giant merino sheep statue. This area's unique geography has made it a magnet for gliding enthusiasts. The northwesterly wind blows steadily to form the famous Northwest Arch, a thermal that can take the glider pilots to 10,000 metres. Scenic soaring can be arranged. The road to Mt Cook hugs the edge of Lake Pukaki. The exquisite opaque turquoise colour of this lake and others in the area is caused by fine, glacier-ground rock particles held in suspension. The landscape is a mixture of high country tussock, farmland and snow-capped mountains. The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park includes the highest peak in Australasia (Mt Cook - 3755m). The region attracts mountain climbers, hikers and scenery fanatics. Heli skiing, heli hiking and aerial sightseeing provide visitors with amazing memories. A variety of walking trails begin in or near Mount Cook Village – most take only a couple of hours.
Join your Glacier Explorers vehicle at The Hermitage Hotel, Terrace Road, Aoraki Mount Cook Village, Mount Cook National Park to commence a Glacier Boat Cruise tour. Be taken to the beautiful Tasman Valley where the guide will lead on a gentle half hour stroll to the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake. Board a boat to explore the fascinating glacial landscape dotted with icebergs and the ever-changing ice face of the glacier. The boat passes so close to the icebergs clients can touch them! Commentary from the guides imparts their knowledge and passion for this amazing alpine environment. This trip provides spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and some of the best photographic opportunities available in the national park. Tour involves a 15 minute drive, a 30 minute walk to Glacier Lake and 45-60 minutes of cruising. Tour concludes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes after commencement, back at The Hermitage Hotel.

Overnight: The Hermitage Hotel in a Standard Room / Superior Room for 3A,2A1C,2A2C,4A)

DAY 8 – MT.COOK – LAKE TEKAPO TO CHRISTCHURCH (APPROX 331KM)

The road to Lake Tekapo takes you down the Tasman Valley, where you can visit New Zealand's largest glacier, the Tasman. At the southern end of Lake Pukaki you’ll turn left and drive through golden tussock land to Lake Tekapo. The settlement of Lake Tekapo is at the southern end of the lake. Fishing, kayaking, bike riding, horse trekking and skiing are some of the things you can do. The Church of the Good Shepherd and the sheepdog statue are great photo opportunities. The scenic route to Christchurch leads you out of the Mackenzie Country, named after the legendary Scottish sheep rustler who once roamed the area. The highly scenic climb up to Mount Hutt is followed by the natural beauty of the braided Rakaia River. Explore the old coal mining settlement of Glentunnel before passing through the farms and fields of the Canterbury Plains and on to Christchurch.
