Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Launceston
Estimated distance: 213km / 3 hours 30 minutes

Welcome to Launceston, Tasmania's second largest city and gateway to the north. Its magnificent original Victorian streetscapes and architecture lend a historic ambience to the city.

On arrival, pick up your car at the Hertz Airport Car Rental counter. Head north to the Tamar Valley, pick seasonal berries at Hillwood Berry Farm; visit some of Tasmania's acclaimed cool-climate wineries such as Leaning Church, Ninth Island, Moores Hill Estate and more. Smell the flowers at Lavender House and don't miss Seahorse World and Platypus House at Beauty Point.

Visit Bridestowe Lavender Estate at Nabowla and, in summer walk through fields of lavender. Nearby, tee off at the internationally acclaimed twin links courses of Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm.

Before heading back to Launceston, ride the chairlift across the Cataract Gorge located in a scenic inner-city reserve. Its central span of 308 metres is believed to be the longest single chairlift span in the world.

Overnight in Launceston.

Day 2: Launceston - Scottsdale - St Helens
Estimated distance: 182km / 2 hours 45 minutes

Today head north towards Scottsdale which is just under an hour's drive from central Launceston. Visit the Forest EcoCentre, a unique architectural experiment in energy-saving design showcasing Tasmania's finest timbers, forest ecology and history of the area. Enjoy a picnic in North East Park then challenge yourself to a half-day return walk to the summit of Mount Stronach for panoramic views of the forests and farms. You will see crops growing in surrounding fields and contented dairy cows grazing.

Just west of Scottsdale, Nabowla is famous worldwide for its lavender. Visit the Bridestowe Estate Lavendar Farm which produces the finest quality lavender flowers and lavender oil. The rolling lavender fields are a spectacular sight during flowering in December and January.

Head east towards St Helens. From St Helens you can explore stunning Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires, which extend to Eddystone Point. The Bay of Fires (named by British Captain Tobias Furneaux, who only saw the smoke from the fires of the local Kunnara Kuna tribe) is a coast of white sandy beaches dotted with giant granite boulders. To learn about the fascinating history of this seaside town, head to the St Helens History Room and find out about the days of sealers and whalers.

Overnight in St Helens.

Day 3: St Helens - Bicheno - Freycinet National Park
Estimated distance: 120km / 2 hours

Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast is known for its laid-back lifestyle and outdoor activities. You can explore the coast at your own pace in a sea kayak, or pick up some local knowledge on a guided boat trip. Marine life and seabirds abound in Governor Island Marine Reserve- stay dry in a glass-bottomed boat or scuba dive amid sheer rock walls, deep fissures, caves, sponges and sea whips. Tasmania is considered one of the best temperate water dive sites in the world.

There is plenty to do on dry land as well. Motor tricycle tours, a Grape Escape wine tour and walks to Rocking Rock and the blowhole or along the sandbar to Diamond Island Nature Reserve are popular. Penguin tours are one of the town's most popular attractions, while the local wildlife park has a wide array of fauna, including kangaroos, Tasmanian devils and pelicans.

Waterfalls tumble to tranquil lakes and river ravines in nearby Douglas-Apsley National Park, while to the south, in Freycinet National Park, you can take the famous walk to Wineglass Bay, one of the best beaches in the world.

Overnight in Coles Bay.

Day 4: Freycinet National Park - Swansea
Estimated distance: 60km / 1 hour

Today spend some time in Freycinet National Park exploring. Take a scenic flight from Friendly Beaches for spectacular views of Tasmania's East Coast from air or discover Wineglass Bay from the water with a four-hour Wineglass Bay Cruise. Visit Freycinet Marine Farm to taste some of Tasmania's best fresh seafood - oysters, mussels, scallops, abalone and rock lobster harvested fresh from the farm daily. In the afternoon head to Swansea and stop at Kate's Berry Farm for yummy icecream and scones.

Overnight in Swansea.

Day 5: Swansea - Hobart
Estimated distance: 230km / 3 hours

Depart for Hobart today. Visit the historic town of Richmond where you find Australia's oldest preserved convict gaol and bridge as well as St John Catholic Church.

Next onto Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to observe Tasmanian devils and many other fascinating native animals before arriving into Hobart, one of the world's most beautiful and friendliest cities; nestled between Mount Wellington and the sea. White beaches on its outskirts, historic buildings at its heart; Australia's second-oldest city has a lifestyle of its own.

In the evening, dine on trawler-fresh seafood at harbourside restaurants like Fish Frenzy, Mures Upper Deck or Blue Eye.

Overnight in Hobart.

Day 6: Hobart - Huon Valley - Hobart
Estimated distance: 154km / 2 hours 30 minutes

Head south to the beautiful Huon Valley and walk above the treetops at the Tahune AirWalk near Geeveston. Traverse the Eucalyptus forest canopy, home to the Earth's tallest flowering plant (Eucalyptus regnant) and leatherwood trees. If you are feeling adventurous, cable hang glide down the valley from near the AirWalk.

Take a thrilling jet boat ride at Huon River Jet Boats; visit fruit orchards and the Apple and Heritage Museum to explore Tasmania's apple history; or even stop by roadside stalls to buy fresh Tasmanian apples and other fruits by just paying using an 'honesty box'.

In the afternoon, drive up to Mount Nelson Station Cafe for afternoon tea by the fireplace while admiring the glorious views of Hobart. Just before sunset, take a scenic flight over Hobart with seaplanes taking off from the Hobart waterfront. For the energetic; paddle around the Hobart docks.

Overnight in Hobart.
