Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Melbourne - Philip Island
Estimated distance from Melbourne to Phillip Island: 165km / 2 hours

Upon arrival at Melbourne International Airport, pick up your car from Hertz's Car Rental counter at the airport and commence your self drive experience to Phillip Island.

En route you can experience true Aussie hospitality at Warrook Cattle Farm. You are welcomed into the historic homestead with its antique furniture and open fires to enjoy a delicious home-cooked BBQ, join the weatherproof hayride for a "full farm tour" finishing with Billy Tea. Other activities include shearing, working sheep dogs, hand milking, feeding the lamb and boomerang throwing. Continue on to San Remo where you will cross the bridge to Phillip Island - home to the world famous Penguin Parade, one of Australia's most popular natural tourist attractions. Discover Cape Woolamai where land and sea collide as pounding surf thunders against granite cliffs.

Stop at the Koala Conservation Centre and walk amongst the tree tops where you will meet a koala. Arrive into the Cowes Township where you can stay on the Esplanade. Why not enjoy an Australian Rock Lobster dinner at one of the local restaurants before or after (depending on the time of the year) your short 10-minute drive to the Penguin Parade.

Before the "Parade" stop in at Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre, here you will encounter the world's largest Australian fur seal colony. Here you will also view The Nobbies where inter-tidal rock platforms surge with life. Finally at dusk you will witness the spectacular parade of these little Penguins coming back from the sea and waddling across the beach in to their burrows. A truly amazing experience.

Day 2: Phillip Island - Sorrento - Queenscliff
Estimated distance: 156km / 2 hour 50 minutes

This morning cross the road to the beach and feed the seagulls before commencing your journey around Westernport Bay to Mornington Peninsular, one of Victoria's most picturesque destinations. Located on three sides by the waters of Port Phillip Bay, Westernport Bay and Bass Strait the Mornington Peninsular is surrounded by gently rolling hills, kilometers of sparkling bay beach, rugged surf beach and spectacular coastal scenery.

Along the way visit the Red Hill Cherry Farm or Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm, where you can freshly handpick your own berries & strawberries (Oct - Apr only). You can stop along the way at anyone of the numerous wineries and enjoy lunch. Next stop is Ashcombe Maze and Water Gardens. Step inside Australia's oldest and largest hedge maze. With over 25 acres of masterfully composed and internationally renowned gardens.

Continue to drive to Sorrento to take a ferry accross to Queenscliff (Ferries depart every hour, on the hour between 7am to 6pm daily) Make sure you catch the ferry at the time booked. The spectacular 40-minute trip on the Sorrento Queenscliff Ferry Service links Melbourne's most magnificent coastal regions: the Bellarine Peninsula and Mornington Peninsula.

BIG4 Beacon Resort is a popular holiday destination nestled at the entrance to Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria, surrounded by a national marine park. It has, over many years, become an intricate and special part of many people wonderful memories.

Day 3: Queenscliff - Apollo Bay
Estimated distance: 134km / 2 hour 10 minutes

In the morning, explore qround Queenscliff. Be charmed by the historic seaside village of Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula, with its elegant Victorian-era hotels, solid old churches and quaint fishermen's cottages. Wander down Hesse Street to discover art galleries, shops and great places to dine. Pick up local produce at the Queenscliff markets.

Relax by the beach, picnic under giant foreshore pines, and breathe in the salty sea air. Queenscliff attracts visitors from all points of the compass who come for the grand heritage streetscapes, buzzing beachside arts and crafts scene and sweeping golf greens.

Explore endless opportunities for water activities on Port Phillip Bay, with a range of charter boats departing Queenscliff. Dive down to some of Australia's best reefs and shipwrecks, with abundant marine life to see. Swim with dolphins and seals or try a spot of fishing from piers, beaches or charter boats.

Continue your drive towards Torquay where you might want to stop for lunch. Check out at Front Beach Cafe, overlooking the breathtaking magnificence of Torquay beach. Sophisticated decor and peaceful ambience greets you, along with the friendly staff. With spectacular views blended with a superb menu, this cafe is a must for any tourist and local alike. Live music to set the mood at any time of day. Front Beach Cafe is situated opposite the Torquay front beach, with uninterrupted water views!

Arrive in Apollo Bay for your check in at the hotel. If you arrive early, you might want to check out at Goats of Gaia Soup Co.

Day 4: Apollo Bay - Port Fairy
Estimated distance: 189km / 2 hour 40 minutes

From Apollo Bay, follow the Great Ocean Road into the lush rainforest of the Otway National Park and turn off to the Otway Fly Treetop Walk, an easy hour's drive. Reach for the sky along the treetop canopy walkway - the longest and tallest of its type in the world - or up the adrenaline with a zip-line tour. Back on the Great Ocean Road, get your camera ready for the spectacular coastline leading to Port Campbell and its famous 12 Apostles, a group of magnificent rock stacks rising up from the Southern Ocean. Descend all 86 of the Gibson Steps to walk down to the wild beach for a ground-level view of the 12 Apostles. Take plenty of time to stop at lookouts over the cliffs of the Loch Ard Gorge and, just beyond Port Campbell, the hauntingly beautiful Bay of Islands. For the best views of this beguiling coastline, take to the skies on a helicopter tour. Unforgettable!

Continue along the Great Ocean Road west, to Warrnambool. Explore the maritime capital's history then head to the viewing platforms at Logans Beach to spot its impressive winter visitors: southern right and blue whales. Catching a glimpse of these giants schooling their calves just offshore is truly awe-inspiring.

From Warrnambool, drive towards Port Fairy and take the turn-off to Tower Hill State Game Reserve, an easy 15-minute drive. Take to the walking tracks, keeping an eye out for koalas, emus, kangaroos and waterbirds who roam freely among the hills and lake-filled craters of this extinct volcano. Visit the Worn Gundidj Visitor Centre to find out more about the reserve's Aboriginal and geological history. Top off the day with dinner in nearby Port Fairy. Dine on seasonal regional fare at the historic dining room at the Merrijig Inn, Victoria's oldest inn.

Day 5: Port Fairy - Melbourne
Estimated distance: 286km / 3 hour 30 minutes

Head back to Melbourne in the morning. En route you might want to visit Ballarat, a heritage precinct and unearth the city's rich gold mining history and magnificent architecture on a self-guided heritage walk. The grand tree-lined streets are perfect for meandering, the heritage trails are dotted with elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings, parks, gardens, statues and churches. Dig deeper into the region's gold-mining history with a visit to open-air gold-rush museum Sovereign Hill. Try your luck panning for gold, brace yourself for an underground mine tour, and learn about rare 19th-century trades.

Enrich the last day of your trip with a short detour to nearby Hepburn Springs, named for its naturally occurring mineral springs. Taste the different mineral waters from old-fashioned pumps in the Hepburn Springs Mineral Springs Reserve, or soak it up - literally - with a pampering spa at Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa. Fully rejuvenated, make the short drive back to Melbourne. Check-in your accommodation in Melbourne and drop off your car at Hertz downtown depot to avoid the pricey overnight parking.
