6 Nights Travel Photography - Bhutan (Festival: Black-Necked Crane Festival)

Join Alvin Foo, The Principal of Canon Imaging Academy Singapore, on this small intimate group photography journey to Bhutan. The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is an untouched paradise of thick pine-forested mountains surrounding sublime valleys against the backdrop of the majestic snow-capped Himalayas. During the tour, there will be plenty of opportunities to shoot images of exquisite temples, capture scenes from a lively market or crimson-robed monks against a backdrop of whitewashed Dzongs. Alvin will work with all the participants to help develop his or her unique vision. In addition, participants will also be able to gain access for photography in private monastery!

The highlight of this tour is the annual event, Black-Necked Crane Festival which will be celebrated at the courtyard of Gangtey Goenpa in Phobjikha valley. This festival is an occasion for the locals to rejoice and celebrate the arrival of this endangered and majestic bird which becomes an inseparable part in their daily lives during the winter months. Having been in the photography industry for more than 7 years, Alvin has a wealth of experience to share with his fellow photography enthusiasts. He is highly passionate about visual story-telling and has worked on personal and commissioned projects around the world. DAY 1 (09Nov) SINGAPORE - PARO - THIMPHU (Elevation 2400m) [Lunch / Dinner]
Flight details: Singapore - Paro / KB501 / 09Nov / 0700-1120HRS (transit Culcutta)

We have an early morning flight to Paro. On arrival at Paro, we will take a slow drive through the countryside to get familiar with the landscape. With a group of photographers, we want to take this afternoon slow by orienting all members to the destination. The drive to Thimphu will be slow and we will stop for a few photo stops along the way.

*National Memorial Chorten - which was built in honor of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk
*Dechen Phodrang Monastery - sits on top of a steep hill overlooking the Bhutanese capital, Thimphu. For centuries, the monasteries have provided a home and an education to thousands of Bhutan's poorest children.
If the above places are not done on this day, we will do it on day 6 when you have more time.

DAY 2 (10Nov) THIMPHU - PUNAKHA [Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner]
Punakha has one of the most beautiful Dzongs in the entire country and we'll explore it from every angle! Several other temples in the area offer unique photographic charms too and the village of Chimi is a particular favourite for sunrise! In addition, we will also have opportunity to stop over at some farmland and houses for photography !

*Chimi Lhakhang - situated on a hillock in the centre of the valley, is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the late 15th used humour, songs and outrageous behavior to dramatise his teachings and because of that, he is also known as "Divine Madman". This temple is also known as the temple of fertility. It is widely believed that couples who do not have children and wanting one, will get a child very soon if they pray in this temple!. This small 16th century temple of fertility is decorated with colourful phalluses.
*Punakha Dzong - built strategically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637. by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative centre of the region. Punakha Dzong has played an important role in Bhutan's history. Damaged by 4 catastropic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has been fully restored by the present King.

DAY 3 (11Nov) PUNAKHA - GANGTEY [Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner]
In the morning, we join the local in their Crane Festival. The valley of Phobjikha is well known as the winter home of the Black necked crane (Grus Nigricollis). Bhutan is home to around six hundred black necked cranes with Phobjikha being one of the popular places that the birds migrate to in the winter months from the Tibetan plateau. The elegant and shy birds can be observed from early November to end of March. Overlooking the Phobjikha valley is the Gangtey Goempa. This is an old monastery that dates back to 17th century.

Lots of photos opportunities here including going to the back stage to see the preparation!

DAY 4 (12Nov) GANGTEY - PARO [Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner]
We head back to scenic Paro Valley, home to many of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries and the country’s only airport. This mixture of old and new makes Paro an important part of Bhutan’s past, present, and future. The valley is home to Chomolhari (Jomolhari) Mountain, located on the northwestern border of Bhutan and Tibet. Often called the wife of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain, Chomolhari is Bhutan’s third tallest mountain at 24,035 feet. The glacier waters flowing from the mountain feed the rivers of the Paro Valley.

Along the way, we will be stopping by farm for photography.

DAY 5 (13Nov) PARO [Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner]
This morning, we will have a special arrangement to visit a private monastery for photography (Photography is usually not allowed in a monastery).
If time permits, you can get blessings by the lamas in the monastery!
Places that we will be covering today includes:-
Paro (Rinpung) Dzong means Fortress on Jewels because it was built using stones rather than clay. It is an excellent example of 15th-century architecture and one of the most impressive dzong in Bhutan. It currently serves as the government center of Paro. A cantilever bridge that crossed the river was damaged by fire in 1907 and later washed away by floods, so the original construction was lost.

Located on a hill above Para Dzong is Ta Dzong. This cylindrical watchtower was built in 1649 and converted into the National Museum of Bhutan in 1968. The spiral-shaped building holds antiques, art, textiles, weapons, and household items that tell the history of Bhutan.

Please rest early today for a very early start the following day!

DAY 6 (14Nov) PARO [Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner]
Start the day at about 6am to the base camp of Taktsang - High above the Paro valley, this monastery - also known as the Tiger's Nest - perches on a rocky mountainside at 3,000m. It was built in the 8th century, when legend has it the 2nd Buddha, Guru Rimpoche, meditated here, having flown from Kurtoe valley on the back of one of his consorts who had taken the form of flying tigress. To Buddhist pilgrims this is one of the most sacred sites in the Himalayas; to anyone it has to be one of the most spectacular.

This evening, enjoy a local hot stone bath to relax your muscles after the long day at Takshang!

DAY 7 (15Nov) PARO -SINGAPORE [Breakfast]
We bid farewell to the magical kingdom in the sky and head back to Singapore.
